A Fire Marshall report was issued requiring various fire safety upgrades. Items 15 -18 in the report require immediate repair to the walls surrounding the cells to provide for a 2-hour fire rating. CBSA Kitchener has had a significant increase in arrests and were initially advised that they cannot use the cells until reparation is made. However, a temporary solution was found until the repairs are made but the Fire Marshall requires that the work begin immediately.
There is an existing wall in front of the two cells that needs to be extended to the slab per CBSA Security and the Fire Marshall. We also need to ensure the wall has a minimum fire rating and a fire-rated door to be installed with security access. The gap between the existing wall and the ceiling be enclosed.
Another fire safety issue is that there are no sprinklers in the hallway behind the cell area. However, after the site walkthrough with the PSPC Fire Engineer, the walls behind the cells may have a 2-hour fire rating, if repairs are made. This must be confirmed later by the Fire Marshall.
Fire rated glass is needed on the new fire wall in front of the cells.
Part of the ceiling in and around the cell, lighting and ductwork will need to be demolished and replaced and fire dampers installed to meet the fire safety standards. This will require CBSA CCTV equipment to be moved prior to the work beginning.
